Why not? When you get a day off for her birthday , you ought to show your gratitude right.

Funny how two of the states celebrate her birthday in October and the rest on the second monday of June. I really love the fact that they try to keep the public holidays on Fridays/Mondays whenever possible.

As soon as I got back from my blink-and-you-miss-it trip to India , I started planning for the June long weekend. A rather early start for me , but too late by Aussie standards - people here plan a few months in advance!!! So we ended up making a plan for Port Stephens which meant just a 4 hours drive and no flight bookings to worry about.

A beach holiday in the middle of winter? And that too when a 90 % chance of rain was predicted ? - I was pretty much prepared for a disastrous holiday. But luck was on our side .and the rain gods too. While it rained non-stop here in Sydney , we had 2 days of sunshine in Port Stephens which meant we managed to do our whale watching cruise and sand boarding adventure without getting wet :-D

30 minutes of sailing with the whales (they move really slow I have to say) and I was left with one question - Don't they get bored? I mean , all they do is sail around and eat(tons of fish that too) all day. But it was a real relaxing time - being in the middle of the sea for a few hours :-)

Sand boarding - not as exciting as I expected it to be.How many times can you climb up a dune to just come speeding down for a few seconds to end up with sand in your mouth and ears and nose ? I say , 4. Should have gone for the Quad bike tours instead.

Can't really say much about the food - almost all places specialised in seafood and being allergic to seafood , I was left with not many options.

Our accommodation turned out to be a real good choice. When I booked a studio room at 90 AUD/night I wasn't expecting much. But a really spacious room located next to a national park and with a private beach access was what greeted us. And they even provided us with flash lights to go walking in the park in the evening :-)

The best part - beautiful beaches with hardly anyone around :-)

The sad part - didn't get to see any of the ship wrecks because rough seas prevented access :-(

I never gave it a second thought. I like cars. As in, on seeing a nice looking one, I will probably go “Hmm. Nice if I can buy one like that. Nicer if it has automated parking”. But I don’t love them and is not the type to spend hours reading auto magazines. So I had assumed Top Gear was not my cup of tea till I actually saw one episode of Top Gear UK on TV. I don’t know whether it’s the British accent or the very charming Jeremy Clarkson, but I was hooked.

Hooked enough to do my version of a Top Gear in my mind when I have to rent cars for my site visits. (Disclaimer: I have driven all of 6 or 7 different ones during my driving adventures and the ones I get to drive are a league apart from the ones they cruise around in. Let us not even go into the charm department.) .The one would never forget is Nissan Micra. Felt like I was in a toy car, the blue paint just helped the feeling I guess. Had a Gulliver-in-Brobdingnag moment when a huge truck passed me by

Now that I have shifted to a new job, my site visit days are behind me .So no more of the 2-night stands (with rental cars that is) I am definitely going to miss those days.Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-5211894465633845672012-01-11T20:56:00.000-08:002012-01-11T21:06:40.320-08:00A trip or twoLast month this time, I was so eagerly waiting for my office Xmas-New Year closedown. 10 days of not having to worry about ironing your shirt and yes, not having to work too. We were expecting just a long weekend break for xmas and had planned for a 4 days trip and since we came to know of the 2 weeks closedown too late to book flight tickets (without causing heartburn) , we went ahead with our original plan. And off we went to Coonabarabran – The Astronomy Capital of Australia. I spent 30 minutes trying to learn how to pronounce Coonabarabran because the way I did made it sound like one sleepy little village somewhere in Kerala. Haven’t really learned to roll my tongue the way Aussies do :-)

And as usual I had an excel sheet for it.

Sample entry:
24-Dec 8:00 AM Start drive (450km , approx. 6 hours)
24-Dec 4:00 PM Arrive at Mathew Flinder's Motor Inn , Coona
24-Dec Drive to Coona towncenter and dinner

Is this normal? I am starting to get worried about myself :-) And I am definitely not getting into event management.

The trip didn’t start too well. The weather forecast showed thunderstorms for the whole week, my music player broke down the night before (The Husband (TH)’s song collection doesn’t really suit my driving mood) and I got a weird haircut the day before (fringes on curly hair!!!Seriously Anphy, what were you thinking?).

I had actually been looking forward to the 450km drive, but have to admit that driving on long stretches of a deserted highway is not much fun. And we arrived at Coona to find only a Chinese restaurant open for dinner :-) The Inn we stayed at is owned by a sweet German couple and I would stay there again just for their breakfast and the free wifi.

But Day 2 went better. My music player mysteriously sprang back to life and my collection of songs cheered up TH so much that he took to ‘actually’ listening to the GPS lady giving instructions instead .For the first time in my life , I did absolutely nothing conventional to celebrate Christmas. We went to the Sandstone caves and Sculptures in the Scrub in Pilliga forest. I got very excited about the 30km dirt track we had to drive on; but if I were to do the same in India I would have been more pissed than excited – me and my double standards. Hehe. And came back to find that all restaurants were closed for Lunch on Christmas. So we had Pita Bread and yoghurt followed by a packet of prunes for our wonderful Xmas Lunch :-( The plus - I didn’t have to cook :-)

Next day , we headed to the Warrumbungles. Saw a couple of Emu’s crossing the road- I never thought they even existed!!!The best part was the 12km Grand High Tops walk we did there. Breathtaking- literally and figuratively. We had the place, by which I mean the whole park :-) , to ourselves – not many people crazy enough to go bushwalking the day after Christmas, I reckon. I am not complaining since we had kangaroos for company. It took us around 5 hours and it was raining for the first 1 hour or so but it was so much fun. We had planned for a night time telescope viewing but it got cancelled because it was too cloudy. I was secretly hoping that it would get cancelled since my leg muscles were creaking and groaning after all the walking. By then we were already feeling so bad about the trip coming to an end that we ended up planning our next trip to Canberra right then and there.

And Day3 , we drove to the Siding Spring Observatory and then headed back home .Managed to see 7 planets in the Virtual Solar System Drive .

Would love to post some photos but then I deleted the whole folder by mistake as part of my ,ahem ,weekly laptop de-cluttering. Now I am really starting to get worried about myself :-)

Note : we did make it to Canberra 2 days later , but who wants to read about driving around in crazy roundabouts ? :-DAnphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-91206970148101765262011-11-16T16:26:00.000-08:002011-11-16T19:25:07.665-08:00Of fire alarms and GoogleFrom here on the husband will be referred to as TH to save me some typing since he is making more than a cameo appearance in this one.

We were in deep slumber when a series of shrill beeps woke us up. We sat up in bed, looked at the clock -3am (That’s when your body needs the most rest or so I have read somewhere – yes, I that was the first thought I had on seeing the clock).
We decided to investigate, that is me sitting in the bed, sleepy eyed, mumbling this and that and poor TH walking around the apartment. The first suspect was my laptop which had been giving strange error messages of late. Maybe it decided to give in finally, we thought – but no, the beeps (increasing in frequency and shrillness by the second) were not from there. TH said it could be the fire alarm and I was too sleepy to put my brain to any exercise and come up with any alternative theories. Though I remember saying something about voltage surges causing it , I am supposed to be an electrical engineer after all.

Once outside the bedroom, TH found the source of the beeps to be a small plastic box mounted above the bathroom door in the hallway .We had seen this box every day for the last 6 months but never gave a second thought to it. To our defence, smoke detectors and alarms are not common objects inside a house in India. The only fire alarms I am familiar with are the ones on office (heard during the routine tests) and they didn’t beep. But we checked all the appliances just to be sure and sniffed around for smoke. And then we started hearing similar beeps from other units around us and we were convinced there was fire in the building but nobody was running out. Poor brain, this level of confusion at 3 am:-D My brain had started functioning by then and I realized that if it indeed was a fire alarm, the fire brigade should have been outside the building by then – we live a few hundred meters from the fire station after all.

Anyway TH pressed some button on the box and the beeping stopped. That is when we decided to call for help aka Google (Dear Google – what would I do without you). I typed in “beeps from fire alarm” and came across a number of discussions on the same. Normally the beeps occur when the battery is weak and needs to be replaced. I even found the operation manual of our alarm online to confirm. But what I found interesting was that more than one person had reported the beeps starting around 3am – a conspiracy or what to catch us off guard when our body is at its weak!!
So TH removed the battery. The chance of a real fire happening when our alarm was down and out against the very depressing thought of losing more sleep in case it started to beep again – we took the risk and went to sleep again.

But we were too excited to sleep. So we ended up talking very serious stuff – for example, how we need to have an emergency response kit with us to take in the event of us running out of the apartment in case of an emergency. If there really was a fire at that moment, TH said he would take the passports and a laptop and his wallet. I said I would take the tablet (to play angry birds which can distract me enough to avoid any panic attacks in emergency situations) and my jewellery (I can sell it in case we run out of money right?) and drifted off to sleep. On second thoughts , my wallet and the car keys as well.

And then we sat bolt upright – 4 or 5 beeps. Or did we just imagine it?

Update : came across this in a site-"Smoke detectors go off between 2am-6am because the ambient temperature drops considerably then. This causes the battery voltage to drop below the smoke detector’s low voltage warning level and bingo, off she goes!!!"

And I am not alone in my conspiracy theories :-)Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-31285190918951548182011-11-08T17:49:00.000-08:002011-11-22T17:19:37.454-08:00So fickleI look out of my office windows and see clear blue skies, but the weather forecast for today says “thunderstorms developing during the afternoon” . And I have a 3.5 hours drive ahead of me. My colleague is so concerned that he has checked the weather some 3 times already and tells me not to get deceived by the oh-so-pretty skies. The weather outside is hot and humid and that apparently is highly conductive to the development of a thunderstorm. And by 4pm , I might see heavy downpour after all or it might just stay the way it is. And Sydney had heavy rain yesterday evening.

Come on dear weather gods , please make up your minds ,fast. I tell you, I hate(am scared , to be honest) to drive in the rain

Update : The rain gods took pity on me. Not a drop on Wednesday :-)

Further update : But it rained the next wednesday and then the next :-(Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-40880263279635126672011-10-24T19:07:00.000-07:002011-10-24T19:13:53.368-07:00Vacation - what else could I name it?For the first 17 years of my life, the word vacation had only one meaning – the onam ,Christmas and summer vacations from school.

Then came the 4 years in college where vacation meant the rather long and lazy breaks between semesters where I would forget all that I learned during the previous semester and start afresh.

The next 5 years in Delhi , the 2 X two week long breaks every year came in. 2 weeks sounded awfully long to your manager but terribly short to your parents and all I could remember were the excitement before it and the “shall I just resign and go back?” brooding during the return flight .

And there was 2010 when I got married and was forced to be in a long-distance-marriage for a year. Then vacations were the trips to Pondicherry and jaipur and kumarakom and many others we planned over phone and never got to execute, because we had too much stuff to take care of.

It was after coming here that I actually started taking vacations, not that we would take days off from work to travel but we make sure that we make maximum use of the weekends and holidays. Of course, the ultimate vacation would remain the whirlwind trips to India. Yet to take one , but already there seems to be a hundred items on the to-do list.
You see people around you taking vacations – my colleague went on a 5 week vacation, people go camping, the lady at the motel I stay on-site went on a 3 week trip to Thailand etc. And being in a new country means that you have lots to explore. And Australians in general seem to love being outdoors. It all rubs off on you I guess. So much that I spend quite a lot of time searching for places/events to go. And the anti-socials that we are (I don’t really make friends that easily, at least not the let-us-spend-weekend-together kind of friendship; neither does the husband), we need to pass time after all :-DAnphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-91634767034114634692011-10-10T23:58:00.001-07:002011-10-11T15:13:38.054-07:00This and ThatDon’t have any subject worth a whole post, so jotting down a few random stuff

Had the first encounter with the Australian medical system. Thanks to my wisdom tooth which decided to do a cameo for two days, spoiling my birthday plans.
Oct 3 was a holiday here. Didn’t make any plans coz of the toothache but come Friday evening I was perfectly alright and spending 3 days inside didn’t sound like a very good idea. Even though it was predicted to be a rainy weekend , we made some last minute plans for Kiama & Jervis Bay. All motels were booked out and we finally managed a place 1 hour away from Jervis Bay. It was in the middle of nowhere , difficult to spot even though it is situated right on the highway but turned out to be a rather lucky find. They had private access to a beach which was quite nice. The room was all wooden panelled giving it a vinatge feel.
Not having a car and having to rent one for trips has its advantages. You feel like being in a cheaper version of Top Gear :-) Not that we possess enough knowledge about cars to come up with the verdicts that we deliver.
Junior Masterchef – Are these kids for real? They are just 10 or 12 ,but act and speak with so much maturity. Its unnerving at times. As to the cooking, each episode gives me a serious “Am I really cooking in my kitchen?” feeling.
I am still uncomfortable with the fact that everyone –from the salesperson in the store to the bus driver to everyone I see in the office- greets me with a “How are you?” or “How is it going?”. A “good morning” or a simple “hi” would be easier to handle than a question which requires me to give an answer and then ask about the well being of the other person and then wait for his answer. Hmm. Maybe I am lacking in the social etiquette department :-)
Another Aussie thing- Maccas for McDonalds. Isn’t McD cool enough? :-P
Though I quite like “Brekkie” for Breakfast
Saw an ad for a car insurance that gives 15% discount for those drivers who don't claim. Makes sense rt?Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-28248941150439625162011-09-22T22:32:00.000-07:002011-09-23T03:43:11.899-07:00PokolbinI enjoy reading food blogs, more for the restaurant reviews than for recipes. There are quite a few Sydney food blogs around and I follow grabyourfork , awifescharmedlife, chocolatesuze regularly. Though I tried writing a few restaurant reviews for zomato.com when back in Delhi, I know I don’t really have it in me to be a food blogger. Read and salivate I can .Write, I better stay away. Same with travelogues. Even I find it hard to read through my travel stories :-X

So this post which I started with the intention of being either a review or a travelogue will instead be just a random recollection of facts from our second trip to Hunter Valley. After a drive around the Upper Hunter Wine Valley, we decided on Pokolbin in Lower Hunter this time. It is rather ambitiously named as the “Wine country”. A look at the map showed vineyards all around. Pointless though, since I was driving and husband doesn’t drink (I used to think that ‘mallu Christian men who don’t drink’ were an extinct species until he came along to refute my theory). And the organizer of the trip aka me, who was very meticulous when it came to the train timings, car pickups, driving distances and lunch and dinner options (obviously), overlooked the fact that wine/cheese factory tours happened only at certain times. So we had to satisfy ourselves with visiting just the tasting rooms. And the sculpture garden at Misletoe wines – but the kangaroo sculpture which looked huge in the brochure turned out to be rather tiny and most of the sculptures are in a pretty bad shape anyway. And then there was the Hunter valley garden, which is huge but since we reached just 30 minutes before closing time, we skipped that too. We would have skipped it anyway considering the 24 dollar entry fee –I am not a huge fan of plants and flowers and feel that all gardens are more or less the same.

The kangaroo sculpure at Misletoe Wines
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 112px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2LqKwbNiinY/TnxcTA2FwlI/AAAAAAAAFiI/VbmWoqCzn6E/s200/DSC01607.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655496713784640082" />

The day before we left, I had gone through the websites of all restaurants listed in the Pokolbin tourist brochure checking out their menus online (and prices-Pokolbin is not easy on the wallet when it comes to fine dining). We finally decided on the Verandah for lunch. The view is really nice, a dinner with that view would be an unforgettable experience .We went for their Australian Tapas Tower which was very good value for money and gave the chance to taste quite a few of their dishes. It was followed by the dessert tasting plate, which was not that impressive. We also had a taste of kangaroo meat for the first time – I found it similar to lamb, but softer.

The Tapas Tower
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 112px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4RzoRY5uewE/TnxdaeS0FcI/AAAAAAAAFiY/s_S0rg7FAL4/s200/DSC01597.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655497941460456898" />

The Dessert Tasting Plate@ Verandah
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 146px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QkDyZCMe3Ik/Tnxcoc8sf7I/AAAAAAAAFiQ/z59k_h97O2s/s200/DSC01598.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655497082105790386" />
The highlight of the trip was the dinner :-D

I was in no mood for anything after the Tapas which was heavy enough but we went for dinner at Maneeya Thai restaurant, which was just opposite to where we were staying. I don’t even remember what I ordered .And husband, who loves everything spicy, ordered Jungle Curry , ignoring the ‘very hot” warning on the menu. “It’s really hot” warning from the waitress was dismissed with “make it extra hot” .And boy, hot it was. Hot enough to make your eyes water and your lips go red. More Hot than spicy, because of all the chilli flakes that we could see floating in the curry. We seriously suspect that the waitress dumped a few spoons of chilli just to prove her point.

A very hot ending to an otherwise nice trip:-DAnphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-40929974973037460242011-08-18T18:20:00.000-07:002011-08-31T18:59:01.478-07:00And then... she drove.....My first driving lesson was at the age of 17. With a couple of months to go for the start of college, my dad thought it was a nice (a feeling that was short lived) idea to let me behind the wheels. My first driving instructor was a rough old chap (a friend of my grandfather and driving guru of my father) and he made me “take the H” on the very first day. Thanks to the parallel set of brakes he had, I passed it with flying colours and came back very confident. A few lessons later, I started driving the family car on quiet roads. All was well till I went and rammed the car onto the compound wall at my uncle’s place. The car suffered minor scratches but my confidence went on a long vacation. Then came college and since I was too lazy to practice my driving when I was home for holidays, chapter 1 of my driving came to a rather abrupt and uneventful ending.

9 years later, chapter 2 took place in Chennai. This time I had to go for classes at 6am and the rains never helped (rains in Chennai in August? – nature was definitely not on my side). Rain was the perfect excuse to miss my classes – or rather the so called classes where 4 of us were bundled into a rickety old car and each of us was allowed to drive for 20 minutes and watch the other 3 drive for the rest of the time. But I got my license to show for it;-P

After moving to Sydney and starting my job, driving became a necessity. I have to travel to a site that lies on a highway, 20km from the nearest town. I have to either take a cab or get a lift , both of which are extremely irritating prospects – cab because of the money involved(I feel guilty even if it is the company’s money) and lifts because of the daily ritual of asking “can you drop me on your way back if it is not a problem for you ? And it would be great if you can pick me up tomorrow morning as well”. And so began chapter 3.

Back in India, I found driving to be somewhat like playing a complicated videogame - like getting things thrown at you from random directions at random intervals? And although I can sit for hours playing videogames, driving didn’t hold the same thrill for me. In my family, driving is considered to be “a skill that can only be mastered by a few” and guess that kind of put a lot of pressure on me and took the enjoyment out of it. But here, everyone drives and it is a part of life and is taken for granted and it changed the way I looked at it. The fact that there are rules and that everyone (ok, almost everyone) follows them helps. And oh, yes, automatic transmission – that just makes life easier ;-)

And for the first time ever, I really enjoy driving – that’s all the 15 hours of driving with an instructor on the side and around 300km ,with an equally instructive husband on the side ,along deserted country roads where most of the time we were the only ones in sight(but to my credit I managed to create a long procession of cars behind me because I couldn't bring myself to go beyond 90kmph though the speed limit was 100kmph .I am sure that when they finally got a lane to overtake and saw me behind the wheels, they went "A woman? That too an Asian? God help us" So much for stereotyping ) but yes ,I am getting there. As my instructor tells me , I just need some more guts :-D

Technically I am on a temporary visa for some time and I can drive with my Indian license – yes, when my husband told me that for the first time I asked him “are you insane?” and refused to believe him but true it is. So looks like this chapter could go on happily for a while. And I absolutely love the opening lines of this one - a day of driving around in the Upper Hunter Wine growing area in NSW dotted with olive farms ,vineyards ,horse studs and farms and picturesque views on either sides. Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-5807045122134864182011-07-27T16:52:00.000-07:002011-07-27T16:53:51.349-07:00Vegemite? Seriously??That would top my “list of questions you would like to ask the Aussies”. I did ask the question to an Aussie and he laughed and said “I have it for breakfast everyday”.Yes , ofcourse.

I had read quite a few moving-to-Australia blogs before coming here (mostly US/UK citizens who had moved here, couldn’t find even one by an Indian and I had decided that I will start one telling the story of how we tumbled down under, but 3 months later I don’t even have a blog post to show for it ) and all of them mentioned vegemite and no one seemed to like it. I thought I would be an exception ;-) the theory of acquired tastes you know. I bought a jar , the very first weekend after coming here , took one lick and the jar has stayed at the back of the cupboard ever since. Come on , seriously ?? Why not peanut butter or nutella or just plain butter?

Another thing all these bloggers found perplexing was the 4WD shopping trolleys (which you can conveniently take home and just leave at the roadside; they will come and pick it up). I find it equally taxing; I would rather carry a 10kg rice bag than push and heave a 4 WD trolley that moves as if it has a mind of its own.

With three months sneak preview of married life and 9 months of long distance marriage and a rather bumpy ride down the migration lane to mark our first year of married life <courtesy , our decision to migrate here> , I had gone through the whole thing with a “Sydney , you better be good “ attitude ;-) The truckloads of paper work that we had to go through to prove that our relationship was “genuine and continuing” -relationship statements and chat history and what else – and the rather long visa process are enough to put any “non genuine” ones out of the race , I believe. hehe.

And yes Sydney has been a nice experience. Australia is my first experience of a developed country and maybe my views are biased. But Sydney is beautiful, even by Kerala standards, and the views from the cliffs on the coast are breathtaking. I am still getting used to the fact that vehicles stop for you at zebra crossings while you can walk as if you own the road (no, not really) and not get honked at. The public transportation system is excellent. I love that you can see people from all different countries around you and hear all those languages and try all those cuisines. And I have started to like the Aussie accent (I even watch Master Chef Australia at the pretext of “getting to know the Aussie accent”). I went to a country town here as part of work and my colleague did a typical Aussie “How ya doing mate” for my benefit. Of course, he had to “translate” it for me :-D

And yes, I saw kangaroos :-DAnphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-73637520293670800202011-02-02T23:40:00.000-08:002011-02-02T23:45:03.926-08:00Well ...Enough water has flown under the bridge that calling 2011 a “new” year seems a little odd. Anyway we, I and my husband that is, had decided to postpone our new year till we are finally together and settled down ;-)
What fun is there in celebrating the New Year when you life is going to be the same old one?

Realized long distance relationships are not that easy to deal with. The bright side of it is that I am back to my a-book-per-week reading routine thanks to an online library facility available at office and enough free time in hand. I had once started making a list of books I read, but gave it up soon enough. But my online library does it for me these days

Read Eat Pray Love byElizabeth Gilbert (Eat part was very nice, Pray was boring and Love was not that bad)

Secrets and lies by Jaishree Misra (Found it engaging enough to try another book of hers – Ancient Promises , just started it yesterday)

Ladies Coupe by Anita Nair (was a tad too slow paced)

Memories of my Melancholy Whores and Of Love And Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (his writing is in a different realm all together, charming neverthe less)

Amen! The Autobiography of a Nun by Sister Jesme (I can’t comment on the authenticity of whatever is stated there, she was the principal of the college right next to my school between and the fact that she has the courage to stand up against such a huge establishment as the church is commendable)

Desert Royal by Jean Sasson (Having read the other two books of the trilogy, I had to read this one)

I am very curious to read The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Realized that compared to the bling and noise and drama of a North Indian wedding, South Indian weddings are pretty sober affairs. Not so big , not so fat in comparison , but still too big and too fat than what is called for.
Still remember how my Swiss colleague gasped in surprise (or was it horror) on hearing about the number of guests at my wedding. Used to 50-100 guests lists , he found it amusing that my Dad found it necessary to invite even our fish monger and house painter for my wedding. He would have fainted if he had come to a Punjabi wedding I am sure.

Realized that time moves ever so slowly when you want it to fly ;-)
Every day I wake up and think – “ 16 more hours before I can sleep again “.
It all boils down to killing time I believe ;-)Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-19791370126367189272010-11-14T22:28:00.000-08:002010-11-15T03:46:16.569-08:00Self TaggedPicked up this tag.Being a book lover, could not resist it.

1. Wouldnt mind going back :-)

Back to Delhi now , can't believe Delhi is ready to host an international sporting event will be conducted here in less than 3 weeks time. atleast the DTC buses are a real eye sore - thats the first thing i noticed on landing here.
Bagels at The bagel factory in Lajpat Nagar and Tiramisu from The coffee bean and tea leaf at Citywalk - I am hooked again :-)Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-55936075131522615532010-06-08T23:41:00.000-07:002010-06-09T00:09:39.818-07:00If I were mushyAlmost half an year has passed since my last post.Spent around 6 months in the arabian desert , sometimes working insane hours but still enjoying it.
Nowadays, sitting in office with nothing much to do and impatiently waiting for the clock to strike 5.30 , I would gladly go bak to 14 hours a day , 5 1/2 days a week routine at site .

Was just checking out all the blogs listed in mine , except for one all are dead ; most of them stopped writing n 2007/2008.After 3 yrs of on and off blogging , I cant say that I have done much justice either.Just a passing fad it was(for me )I guess.
Those people who take to blogging with the same zeal even after years - they really need to be appreciated.

And as to the title of the post - If I were mushy I should be writing a post dedicated to my husband I guess (Got married on 9th May ) , but then that wouldnt be me ;-)
Around 2 weeks of wear saree - wear all the ornaments - then remove them routine , I am back to being myself now ;-)Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-81808985284649666122009-12-19T07:20:00.000-08:002009-12-19T08:40:12.567-08:00Feeling the Pangs of Separation ;-)After professing my love for Delhi in the second last post , when I was all set to feel the giddiness you are supposed to have when you are in love (isnt that how it happens in bollywood movies?), came the twist in the story - i was deported to a sleepy little emirate in UAE for some project work.

Foggy winter mornings gave way to the desert sun and then to dark rainy mornings now . I am infact lucky to be here at this time when the climate is pleasant. But the fact that I have to be in office at 7am (I dont know which insomniac set the working hours) , 6 days a week dampens things.

Aloo paranthas are replaced by shawarmas .Most of the restaurants here are run by mallus and I seem to be eating mallu food (the normal, not-so-gud,not-so-bad variety) with an alarming regularity.

The one and only one Lulu substitutes TGIP , I make religious trips to Lulu every week .(I suffer from the lack of regular doses of retail therapy. Not many places to shop here,my last unsuccessful shopping attempt took a quite a few pieces of chocolates to get over)The shoppers paradise is just 130 kms away anyway.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oTYaBscOolQ/Syz5xgjWH0I/AAAAAAAAD1A/mdwbzPLiA_Y/s200/Dubai+-+27-11-2009+076.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416979080766955330" />

I miss Delhi winter , the stuffed paranthas my friend used to bring me for breakfast (7am and breakfast dont really get along well u see , so as I tweeted once "breakfast is like sunday mass now, happens once in a week and runs for an hour"), dessert from barista (I have not found anything that comes anywhere near to their "dark temptation" ) and most of all waking up at 8am on weekdays :-(

This is where I get my chocolate doses from :-)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oTYaBscOolQ/Syz_SSoY3bI/AAAAAAAAD1I/trmQB33Q_YI/s200/DSC00029.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416985141523832242" />

But life seems to be moving fast , I cant really believe that I have been here for 3 months now!!! I was being honest in my opinion.

The streets were dirty, the buses were crowded and filthy, everything was overpriced (atleast by kerala stds), u always had the “south Indian” tag attached, the heat was unbearable (July is not really the best time to make your debut in Delhi), I seemed to be eating aloo or paneer for every single meal and I was staying so far away from home (knowing I cant just pick up my bag n go like I used to do in college was not very comforting) and the flight tickets were not cheap either – I despised Delhi, and was more than eager to get out(Bangalore was where I wanted to be since all my college friends were there).Used to the “save, save and save some more” (so that you can splurge on a grand house or a big wedding) attitude in kerala, I used to watch the “spend as much as you can” attitude of people here with a smirk. ”I don’t belong here” – I decided.

I did attempt a few times to shift my job n 2007, but nothing worked out and 2008 was a hectic year and I didn’t get much time to fret. But now, after a little more than 3 years spent here, I have realized that the city has slowly grown on me (Though I shifted to noida in Dec 2008 and is technically in UP). If Mumbai was love at first sight, Delhi was the slower version.

Buses are still as bad – but the metro will soon come up, the summers are equally horrible. But...
The crowded streets of chandni chowk with all those yummy street food, the cold winter mornings (i need a motivational speech playing at full volume to just get me out of the rajai), the smell of baking when you walk in front of Wengers in CP (I have done that only once, but it still lingers on), getting lost every time I visit Lajpat Nagar market, all those flyovers (especially the one near aiims where you find curious looking sculptures), the relief you feel when it rains after weeks of the hot summer sun , the labyrinth of roads in the Janpath area(i have not yet understood how people find their way there) , the musical fountain at akshardham temple, the silence inside lotus temple, the golgappes, aloo chats, ram ladoos , paranthes in the paranthe wali gali(how can I forget food)– all these and more
And a stroll along rajpath on a winter evening (attempting that in summer is suicide) followed by a spicy dinner at andhra bhavan – bliss!!!!

And I have made a quite a few friends; a very diverse group indeed - I have the luxury of sitting on my lunch table with 10 people –from 8 different states of India.

And I have relaized that I do love the city now and that Bangalore really doesnt cut it except for the weather maybe ;-) Just like those intermissions in bollywood movies when the hero and heroine realizes ;) the second half lies ahead, I guess it ought to have a happy ending ;D
I regret the fact that I have not seen much of Delhi even after all these years, but I intend to catch up once the metro is up and running (I have a metro station a few minutes walk from my pg, that should help )

I had this post in mind for so long , but what finally pushed me to post it? Maybe “The white tiger” I read last week or “The city of Djinns” I am reading currently.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oTYaBscOolQ/Sovlavs2aBI/AAAAAAAADOc/fs3G8ZBUPH8/s200/Picture+104.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371639228213389330" />

And my roomie of 3 years finally decided to leave me in peace and migrate to greener pastures (Read a phd in US) and I do miss my partner in crime.
My waistline stands proof to it (i would have liked to add my bank balance too reflects it, but it shows no sign of improving whatsoever)Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-21929309626227382632009-04-23T02:45:00.001-07:002009-04-23T02:45:30.372-07:00Long time....Work load at office was at its peak for the past few months .I was under a lot of stress, even got 2 or 3 grey hairs as proof (and for my mother to cry about). I guess that is a good enough excuse for keeping away from blogging, J

I was just experimenting with google reader (I am kind of new to this though it has been around for quite a while I know) and came across my blog posts – 23 in total (the number did surprise me a little, I mean did I really write 23 posts!!!) and yes, looks like my first post was on April 26th 2007 and that makes it almost 2 years. I missed out d first anniversary but am on time for the second. I will surely treat myself to a good dinner today (Ever since me n my roomie shifted to Noida we have been splurging on food-all those calorie loaded weekends explain my reduced bank balance and an extra 10kgs, I think I look malnourished in my college photos - though we complain regularly that Noida lacks good restaurants compared to Delhi. I dare not imagine the consequences if it was otherwise)

So what has been happening? I was never a movie buff to start with, but have been watching a lot of movies these days thanks to friends who have got internet connection with “unlimited downloads” ;) But even now I would prefer curling up in bed with a book anytime, though I have cum a long way from 3-books-in-a-week college days.
I hardly read 2 in a month now

Two movies, which impressed me a lot – Before Sunrise and Before Sunset (I know they are pretty old, but dts y I had taken the anticipatory bail). To keep ppl hooked for 1.5 hours with nothing but 2 ppl talking with each other (of course you have Vienna and Paris as backdrops) isn’t dt easy. I would recommend the 2 to anyone anytime. But 2 of my pg mates found ‘Before Sunrise’ boring. Their review: “bolte ja rahe hain bolte ja rahe “ :O – I consoled them by sayng that they need to grow up a lil more (they are in their final year of engg, not toddlers anyway) to enjoy the beauty of those movies ;)

Maybe I might start blogging more frequently since I have got around 100 movies left to watch and hopefully a bunch of them will cause sudden bouts of creativity(I mean if you count the last few paras dt)Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-24295543343095055202008-11-09T02:24:00.000-08:002008-11-09T02:51:22.760-08:00BackSneezed quite a few times clearing out all the cobwebs ;)
The reason for the absence(as if it matters) is that blogspot has been banned in office.Cant understand how blocking blogs can help the antivirus campaign running srongly n office of late!!!
Anway since I have got net at home now, I "can" blog, whether I "will" is a totally irrelevant issue :)Anphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16417845244105803343noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788683019144280814.post-13655788143308951962008-08-28T03:05:00.000-07:002008-08-28T07:27:00.777-07:00It should be fun!!!With very few channels available n English, I end up watching NatGeo (or Eurosport - the commentaries are in Bulgarain, but who cares?Do people listen to commentaries unless the commentator is either really good or really bad ?)most of the time.

Yesterday there was a show on alien sightings on earth.Though there is no concrete evidence to support the existence of extra-terrestrial life at the moment , one scientist on the show is confident that we will make some contact with aliens by 2020 -2025 AD.

Scientific curiosity apart, just imagine what a frenzy religious leaders around the world will be in,if and when we confirm the existence of ET life? How will different religions explain ET life? That should be fun.
I agree most scriptures do have d concept of diff worlds etc to bail out still it will be a mad rush.

Happened to see an article which says aliens are the fallen angels n bible and goes on to explain how they should be redeemed.LOL!!!

I hope I am alive to see that day but die before the aliens decide to annihilate us :D I am terribly excited :D

"It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in.
However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds.
